What Each Platform Is

• Checkatrade. UK directory of vetted trades. You phone the tradesperson, get a quote, they do the job, you pay them directly. Checkatrade verifies credentials and hosts reviews.
• TaskRabbit. On-demand task platform. Short tasks — help moving furniture, assembling IKEA, small repairs — done by Taskers who set their own hourly rate.
• GeraHome. Marketplace launching soon in the UK. Bookings are not open today and the example listings are not bookable; at launch the plan is a fixed price per service and providers who have passed identity and insurance checks before they are listed.

Verification

Checkatrade performs a set of checks on trades (ID, insurance, references) but the buyer still negotiates directly with the trader. TaskRabbit verifies identity and runs background checks but lets Taskers set pricing. GeraHome has not verified any provider yet: the planned launch process is identity, right-to-work where applicable, insurance, and (for regulated trades) the relevant certification — gas safety registration for gas work, Part P for electrical, etc. Launch pricing is planned to be fixed per service; nothing is charged today.

Pricing Transparency

Checkatrade is quote-based per tradesperson; price is discovered call-by-call. TaskRabbit shows each Tasker's hourly rate; total cost depends on task length. GeraHome is not taking bookings yet; its planned launch pricing is a per-job or per-visit price shown up-front, and the prices on the site today are planned launch prices, not charges.

Payment Flow

With Checkatrade, payment is directly between you and the tradesperson — typically at the end of the job. TaskRabbit collects payment through the platform at completion. GeraHome takes no payment today because bookings are not open. Holding payment until completion is part of the launch design, but it is not live, so it gives no recourse today.

Coverage

Checkatrade is UK-only with nationwide coverage in its categories. TaskRabbit operates in selected US metro areas plus London and a few UK cities. GeraHome is launching soon in the UK only and does not operate in any other country today. For UK needs today, Checkatrade has the deepest trade bench; for small ad-hoc tasks in a covered metro, TaskRabbit is quick; GeraHome is one to join the waitlist for once it launches.

Ideal Use Case per Platform

• Checkatrade — you are comfortable getting multiple quotes from UK trades and managing the relationship yourself; you want the deepest possible trade bench in your postcode.
• TaskRabbit — you need a quick ad-hoc task (flat-pack assembly, heavy lifting, small repair) in a covered city.
• GeraHome — you want to join the waitlist for a UK launch built around fixed prices and checked providers. Bookings are not open yet, so it cannot help with a job today.

No single platform dominates every category or every task. A pragmatic household pattern in London: Checkatrade for specialist one-offs (major bathroom refit), TaskRabbit for urgent lifting-help once a year, and GeraHome on the waitlist for regular cleaning once it launches. Pick the tool per job.
