- Gigabit-capable broadband can deliver download speeds of 1 Gbit/s (1,000 Mbit/s) or more. Per Ofcom Connected Nations 2024, 82% of UK premises could access it as of July 2024. It is usually delivered over full fibre (FTTP) or upgraded cable networks.
- How is the Gera Broadband Index calculated?
- The Gera Broadband Index (0-100) is a transparent weighted score over real Ofcom figures: 45% gigabit-capable availability, 30% full-fibre availability, 20% superfast availability, minus a 1.5x penalty for the share of premises below the Universal Service Obligation. No figure is estimated; the full method is published on this page.
- Which UK area has the best broadband coverage?
- On the Gera Broadband Index, Kingston Upon Hull, City of ranks highest at 94.5/100, with 99.4% gigabit-capable and 99.4% full-fibre availability (Ofcom Connected Nations 2024, July 2024).
- Where does this broadband data come from?
- All coverage figures are from Ofcom Connected Nations 2024 — the fixed-coverage dataset for local and unitary authorities (residential premises), reference period July 2024, published under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Gera computes only the Gera Broadband Index from these figures.
How the Gera Broadband Index is calculated
The Gera Broadband Index (GBI) is a transparent 0-100 score over the real Ofcom Connected Nations 2024 availability figures for each local authority. It is 0.45 × gigabit% + 0.3 × fullFibre% + 0.2 × superfast% − 1.5 × belowUSO%, clamped to 0-100 and rounded to one decimal place. Gigabit-capable availability (the forward-looking metric) carries the most weight, full fibre next, baseline superfast last, with a penalty for the share of premises below the Universal Service Obligation (those unable to receive decent broadband of at least 10 Mbit/s download). Every input is a real published Ofcom figure (July 2024reference period); nothing is modelled, estimated or interpolated. The UK median GBI is 77.4.
